Brave New World 2018 – 2022
This year, emotional Artificial Intelligence will be programmed into conversational interfaces.Instead of shouting at your spouse, child, friend, the driver that hit you, or the person that spilled your coffee, you can scream angrily at your phone, car, Alexa, who might answer with a “Oh, that hurt my feelings. Please don’t shout at me.”
By “looking” at our faces, Artificial Intelligence is already well able to differentiate faked emotions from real ones and can recognize characteristics such as sexual orientation or political leaning.
Patents have already been filed by companies like Amazon and Samsung, for Drones that will be able to recognize our gestures, such as welcome gestures, shooing motions. Don’t get physical yet – but that is coming down the highway.
You may have seen the news last week, construction startup ICON and housing nonprofit New Story unveiled at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, their version of a 3D printed house. 650 square feet, with a living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and shaded porch. In 24 hours and at under $10,000. Less than 50% of this price in developing economies. Almost 8 million people in the US are currently involved in construction work, although serious impact won’t be felt for another 4 years.

In a couple of years, emotional and artificial intelligence will have advanced to the point where you will get medical diagnostics and therapy advice from artificial systems. So far so good? Don’t have to pay inflated prices being charged by the medical system? Expect to get more timely and accurate information – 9 of 10 people seeking a second opinion get a different diagnosis (study by Mayo Clinic’s General Internal Medicine Division). Albeit (I hope) a small percentage, how many doctors are sexual abusers, drug or alcohol users, and how many push pills such as opioids to enhance their income. We already have robots performing surgery under a surgeons control – how long until the robot performs under Artificial Intelligence instead?
There are over 9 million people directly involved in the healthcare profession in the US alone (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2017).

In only 4 years, it will be routine to print clothing, housing, and other buildings. As in the above example of ICON and New Story’s housing projects, will prices start to tumble, or will Corporate greed dictate even greater profits (Martin Shkreli was following not only his own quest for gain, but the Corporate world’s mandate for increasing profits to the Corporation, its management, and shareholders)?
We will travel around the US and elsewhere in self driving cars. Robots will lip read and recognize facial expression and hand gestures (remember Amazon and Samsung have already patented this for drones), becoming the new generation of receptionists, retail store assistants, clerks, cooks, waitbots, and home helpers. That’s another 48 million jobs affected in the US alone. So sorry, sexbots will take a few more years, but not too many!
